Safely on the steel cable with guide Christoph

Whether it’s your very first time on a via ferrata or you already have a few routes behind you – with Christoph as your guide you are well supported technically, physically and mentally.

He makes sure that:

  • the difficulty and length of the route match your abilities

  • you learn or refine the use of via ferrata set, carabiners and steel cable

  • you pace yourself well and take breaks before it gets too tough

  • you feel safe and well guided, even in more exposed sections

Before each tour you’ll have a thorough briefing at almlust: experience, fitness, wishes, possible fear of heights – everything can be discussed. From this, Christoph builds the perfect plan for your day on the rock.

Tour options – from starter to sporty ferrata

To give you exactly the right amount of challenge, we usually offer our via ferrata days in two levels – bookable directly through almlust:

  • Via ferrata Starter
For beginners, moderately sporty guests and families with mountain-loving teens.
    You’ll learn:

    • how to correctly put on and adjust your via ferrata set

    • how to move safely along the steel cable

    • how to place your feet on the rock and still look up to enjoy the view
The tempo is relaxed, the exposure moderate – ideal for building trust in the gear, the technique and yourself.

  • Via ferrata Medium
For everyone who already has some via ferrata experience or feels confident on demanding mountain hikes.
    You can expect:

    • more challenging sections and more air beneath your feet

    • longer tours with more vertical and more metres of ascent

    • technique tips from Christoph on footwork, body tension and energy management
Perfect for sporty mountain fans who want to progress and discover new routes.

Via ferrata set rental – fully equipped by almlust

You’d like to head out with Christoph but don’t have your own gear? No problem.
Right at almlust you can rent a complete via ferrata set:

  • helmet

  • climbing harness

  • certified via ferrata lanyard with energy absorber

Before the tour Christoph will show you how to wear everything correctly and what to pay attention to on the route. If you later want to go on via ferrata routes on your own, this is the perfect foundation.

Preparation, fitness & getting there

To make sure your via ferrata day is a great memory, please keep a few basics in mind:

  • What you should bring

    • sturdy hiking or approach shoes with good grip

    • comfortable outdoor clothing, best in layers

    • a small backpack with water, a snack and, if you like, thin gloves

  • Fitness & head for heights
For the Starter tour, basic fitness and a willingness to move are enough. For Medium tours you should be sure-footed, used to several hours of hiking and free of major issues with heights.

  • Getting to the route
Depending on the chosen route, you’ll start close to Flachau or in neighbouring mountain areas (e.g. towards Dachstein / Ramsau or nearby valleys).
You’ll usually drive your own car to the meeting point; where possible you can also use the Guest Mobility Ticket Salzburg and public transport – Christoph will let you know in good time where you’ll meet.

FAQ – via ferrata with almlust

Do I need previous experience for via ferrata tours?

For the Via ferrata Starter option you don’t need special climbing experience – you should be sure-footed, have basic fitness and feel reasonably comfortable with heights. For Via ferrata Medium it’s ideal if you have already completed a via ferrata or are regularly in the mountains.

Who leads the tours?

The via ferrata tours are organised directly by almlust and led personally by mountain and ski guide Christoph. You’re out on the rock with a certified professional who knows the region and the routes very well.

How do I book my via ferrata tour?

You can either enquire directly at almlust reception or book via the links on this page. That way you can secure your preferred date and plan the rest of your stay around your tour.

Is via ferrata equipment included in the price?

For guided tours the necessary via ferrata gear is usually included or can be arranged through almlust for a small rental fee. You’ll find details in the tour description or receive them when you book.

From what age can children join?

For starter tours, teens from about 12 years upwards can usually take part, as long as they are sure-footed and feel okay with heights. To find out whether a specific tour fits your child, it’s best to talk to us or to Christoph directly – we only recommend tours where everyone can feel comfortable and safe.

What happens in bad weather?

Safety always comes first. In case of thunderstorms or very wet, slippery conditions, the tour will be postponed, adapted or moved to another day. Christoph will decide together with you which option is best for everyone.
